I wonder if The West Wing is a more adult-focused influence? I havent watched much of the show but from what I've seen the Witty Banter it was famous for has the same tenor, and when Sorkin left the show my friend described it like everyone's iq dropped 30 points. Like you say, when reduced to a formula it is cheap and shallow, but good enough to sell tickets.
